Profil Jakarta Green Monster

Jakarta Green Monster (JGM) is a growing community-based organisation which aims to conserve Jakarta’s urban coastal habitats by encouraging local youths to take practical action which reduces waste and restores biodiversity. Jakarta’s wetlands are crucial in the regulation of water to avoid flooding and droughts as well as supporting wildlife. JGM was created in 2005 to tackle degradation of Jakarta’s wetlands by a public which was unaware of the wetland’s importance to sustainability. Around 300 active volunteers, mostly youths and students, support the work of JGM, engaging in the following activities around Jakarta’s wetland conservation areas: 1) Conserving and rehabilitating wetlands by planting of mangroves or clearing-up garbage to create green spaces and ecotourism opportunities 2) Educating local communities about the importance of healthy wetlands, usually engaging with schools and local children 3) Creating innovative community-based waste management schemes, such as recycling plastic pollution into simple products for resale or establishing neighbourhood forums to manage waste management 4) Conducting city-wide public awareness campaigns to reduce the amount of garbage and pollutants dumped into waterways which feed Jakarta’s wetlands Akta Notaris : No.32 tahun 2006.
